Back-End Developer – Database Specialist (Senior in PostgreSQL)

Our partner is a contracting company for the U.S. Army and NATO, and they have launched a global fintech startup focused on developing solutions for core banking systems, payment processing, and identity management. Working in small, agile teams, they prioritize rapid, reliable releases through short development cycles. Their technology stack includes PostgreSQL, Erlang, AWS, and Docker, all geared toward supporting mission-critical functionality.

We are seeking a skilled Back-End Developer with a strong emphasis on relational databases, particularly PostgreSQL, to join our Technology Team. This role is ideal for a Database Developer experienced in managing data and building robust, scalable solutions, while also supporting API development using Erlang. In this position, you will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to deliver high-performance, secure, and compliant backend systems essential to our fintech ecosystem.

Responsibilities

• Database Development & Management: Design, optimize, and maintain PostgreSQL databases to ensure high performance and reliability, especially for high transaction volumes typical in financial systems.
• Stored Procedures & Compliance: Develop complex stored procedures in PL/pgSQL to meet banking and regulatory requirements, with an emphasis on data integrity and precision.
• API Development with Erlang: Build and maintain APIs for internal and third-party integrations using Erlang, ensuring seamless communication between our core systems and external services.
• Third-Party Integration: Integrate with third-party services, such as AML providers, payment processors, and utilities, to expand the functionality and value of our platform.
• Security & Compliance: Implement security measures, including encryption, data privacy (GDPR), and access controls, to protect sensitive financial data.
• Performance Tuning: Optimize database performance for high transaction loads, ensuring minimal downtime and maximum reliability.
• Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with product, design, and operations teams to develop new features and improve existing systems.
• Continuous Improvement: Participate in code reviews, testing, and troubleshooting, and keep up to date with new technologies to enhance development efficiency.

Required Skills

• PostgreSQL Expertise: Extensive experience in PostgreSQL, including advanced SQL and procedural programming (PL/pgSQL), database design, optimization, and tuning.
• API Development in Erlang: Proficiency in Erlang for building and maintaining APIs, with a focus on integrating database logic.
• Third-Party Integration Skills: Experience integrating external systems and services, especially those used in fintech, such as payment gateways and regulatory services.
• Security & Compliance: Strong understanding of data security practices, regulatory requirements (GDPR, PSD2), and standards relevant to fintech.
• Performance Optimization: Proven ability to tune databases to handle high transaction volumes with efficiency and reliability.
• DevOps Familiarity: Knowledge of GitHub and AWS CI/CD pipelines to support automated, reliable deployment.

 Nice-to-Have Skills

• Experience in Fintech: Knowledge of fintech regulations and standards, including PCI-DSS, KYC/AML, and compliance protocols.
• AWS & Docker: Familiarity with AWS cloud services, especially RDS (PostgreSQL), and Docker for containerized applications.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
• Proven experience as a Database Developer and Back-End Developer.
• Proficiency in relational database management systems, PostgreSQL, SQL, and database design principles.
• Strong programming skills in languages such as Java, Python, or C#.
• Familiarity with web development frameworks and RESTful API design.
• Experience with data migration and transformation processes.
• Problem-solving skills and the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
